A spot-on recreation of the high-energy sounds of super bands
Tower of Power; Earth, Wind and Fire; Blood, Sweat and Tears;
Chicago and Steely Dan as Uppercut takes the DHPAC stage November 5th
October 24, 2011Dix Hills, NY -- The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center, Long Island’s premier jazz venue at Five Towns College, will present the rock and funk band Uppercut, performing an evening in tribute to the best of live, horn-led ensembles, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and $25..
Songwriter Tom Waits called it “Swordfish Trombone” -- when music reaches a strong crescendo where not only is the slide of the trombone reaching out to the audience, but the sound just pins you back into your seat. On Long Island, that musical “punch” is increasingly known as Uppercut.
Uppercut is a nine piece high-energy funk, rock and rhythm and blues band whose repertoire is dedicated to the great horn-driven bands of the last forty years. Their performances are noted for their skillful tributes to many great bands, but they also include a number of their original compositions.
The band includes Fred Wadlington on lead vocals, Chris Carbery on guitar and vocals, Karl Schwarz on keyboards and vocals, John Pandolfo on bass and vocals, Frank Bellucci on drums, Jeff Lange on baritone and alto saxophone, Chuck Foell on trumpet, Chris Done on tenor saxophone, Tim Cassera on trombone and Carl Greiner on baritone/alto saxophone.
The band has been enjoying rave reviews:
* Wrote the Island Ear of Uppercut: “Their rhythm section is exceptionally steady and tight, the horns are sharp and crisp, and the individual soloists shine.”
* Wrote Good Times: "This nine piece band features some of the best players on Long Island. The band is a graduate course in the music of the last three decades."
* Long Island Entertainment called Uppercut an “incredible talent. They come packed with a brass section that is tight and right on the money."
“It is always a pleasure to welcome Uppercut to our venue,” said Sandy Hinden, director of the Center. “It is one of the most high-energy shows in our line-up that is always well received.”
