Album that changed the trajectory of rock ‘n’ roll, often cited for Becker and Fagen’s perfectionism in production
August 16, 2011, Dix Hills, New York – The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center is pleased to present local band Stealin’ Dan, recreating the entire Steely Dan Aja album (and then some) live on stage here, commemorating the 35th anniversary of one of most iconic and influential works of the rock ‘n’ roll era. Tickets are still available and are $30, $25 and $20.
Over the past 13 years Stealin’ Dan has built a loyal following by adhering to a simple formula: Assemble the finest local musicians and play the best jazz/rock music ever written.
To many, that not only means recreating the works of Steely Dan founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, but in particular the band’s Aja (pronounced Asia) album, which led to an explosion of jazz and rock fusion popularity in the mid-1970s and early 1980s.
Now, in recognition of the 35th anniversary of the boundary-breaking sixth album Aja released in 1977, Stealin’ Dan will be performing this master work in its entirety. The band, featuring some of the area’s finest local musicians, will perform a tour de force recreation of the Becker/Fagen masterpieces. Keep an ear out for Stealin’ Dan’s unique interpretations of some of those classics.
Aja, listed in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important,” featured guests such as saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Steve Gadd, Bernard Perdie, Michael MacDonald (The Doobie Brothers), Timothy B. Schmitt (Eagles) and many others. The album includes in quick succession: “Black Cow,” “Aja” and “Deacon Blues, completing what was frequently sighted as a “perfect album side” by radio stations (referring to the vinyl version), followed on Side Two by “Peg,” “Home at Last,” “I Got the News,” and “Josie.”
Stealin’ Dan will also play homage to Steely Dan’s fifth album, The Royal Scam, considered the band’s most cynical work, playing selected highlights from that release, which featured top session men including Larry Carlton, notably on the first cut “Kid Charlemagne” and Elliot Randall on “Sign-in Stranger” among other cuts featuring these two and other guests.
