An exciting Sunday afternoon is on tap for fans of big band jazz,
complete with an artist “Meet and Greet” following the show
September 2, 2011, Dix Hills, New York –
The Dix Hills Center for the Performing Arts will present a tribute to the music of the late Canadian jazz trumpeter and Big Band Leader Maynard Ferguson, featuring the “Give It One” Big Band, an 18-member ensemble comprised of New York City’s top jazz players and featuring trumpet titan Ryan Resky, Oct. 2nd at 2 p.m. here at the Center. Tickets are $25, $20 for seniors and $10 for students with ID. A Meet-the-Artist reception will be held immediately following this performance, sponsored by Sam Ash Music.
Ferguson, who died in 2006 after a stellar 50-year career, was best known for his blisteringly high solo runs on trumpet and flugelhorn, hitting “Double C” with ease, and for his work which lives on in classics such as Gonna Fly Now -- The Theme From Rocky, The Theme from Battlestar Gallactica, MacArthur Park, and countless jazz recordings from several of the big bands he led with Jimmy Dorsey, Stan Kenton and the house band at Birdland, “The Birdland Dream Band.”
Trumpeter Ryan Resky has performed as a freelance trumpeter across the country, in Broadway musicals (Chicago, The Full Monty, Kiss Me, Kate), as well as for various artists including Bobby Vinton, John Pizzarelli, Jane Monheit and Harloyn Blackwell and in wind, brass, and jazz ensembles. Ryan was featured on HBO's The Sopranos as a wedding band performer and musical arranger and was the featured soloist with the Big Apple Corps Band performing the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto.
Ryan grew up in Lindenhurst and, after playing lead trumpet in All-State Orchestra, he attended the New England Conservatory and the Brooklyn College-Conservatory of Music, where he performed Principal Trumpet with the Conservatory Orchestra and was the winner of the 2001 Concerto competition performing the Haydn Concerto. He also appeared as soloist with the orchestra on several other occasions performing the Hummel Concerto, Shostakovich Concerto for Trumpet, Piano, and Strings, Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto, and Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets.
Ryan's musical career has led him to many other exciting performances including traveling the country with the premier racetrack buglers of the U.S., the All-Star Buglers. He has performed at the Belmont Stakes, Breeders Cup, the Hambeltonian, Florida Derby, Ohio Derby, Pennsylvania Derby and many others.
In addition, Ryan has also performed with One World Symphony as Principal Trumpet and soloist, the Staten Island Symphony, The Brooklyn Symphony, Big Apple Corps Concert and Marching Band, Metro Chamber Orchestra, LIU Brass Ensemble, TR Touch, Cruise Control and many others.
